All patient assignments are done at the American Optometric Association (AOA) office in St. Louis. The Alabama Optometric Association does not qualify patients nor assign patients to doctors.

The AOA staff will try to assign all those who meet the requirements for the program with a volunteer VISION USA optometrist in their community. Patients will be notified as to which doctor's office to call for an appointment.

The 34,000-member American Optometric Association represents nearly two-thirds of the practicing optometrists in the United States. These doctors of optometry are state-licensed providers of primary eye care services. They diagnose eye health and vision problems; prescribe glasses and contact lenses; treat eye disease with medications; and provide special services such as vision therapy and low vision care.
