Pay Attention to This

Through the eyes, an eye doctor can gain insights into a person's overall health. In fact, some systemic and chronic diseases can be detected with an eye exam. And some diseases, like diabetes, can seriously affect vision in addition to general health. Other eye diseases, like glaucoma, may cause vision damage and eventually blindness without the individual ever experiencing any symptoms.

While November and January are designated to heighten awareness of diabetes and glaucoma, respectively, we hope that your station will air these public service announcements year-round to remind your listeners of the importance of regular comprehensive eye exams, so that no one loses the precious gift of sight to eye disease.

It's been called the thief of sight. That's what glaucoma does. It sneaks up on you—gradually—and steals your sight. Especially if you're over 60 or Black and over 40. Or have a family history of glaucoma. Glaucoma can't be cured. But it can be controlled and the risk of blindness reduced—if glaucoma is detected early. That's why it's important to get regular eye exams. It's easy, and it could save your sight. A message from the American Optometric Association.
